Out with the old. In with the new.
But do you know what's different about the new?!
I'M IN IT!!!
Last year, I wrote a letter to the editor telling them that their issue had inspired me and that although I couldn't finish, it sure had been fun. Well, this year, they wrote me and asked if I'd write an article about it to kick off the new list! Can you believe it?!
So there it is, folks. In the "Talk" section. A real live magazine article. As in in print, published, promulgated. As in "I kick ass!"
Go get a copy! And if you want to do anything fun this summer, just let me know!

I did it!
Sort of.
This was supposed to represent my "amazing" achievement of doing all "110 Fun Things To Do In The Summer". I painted it to look like the cover of last year's magazine; good thing I didn't actually paint all 110 things on there... I'd be even more disappointed.
I also was pretty disappointed in my art skills! I consider myself pretty crafty, but I wasn't feeling it. There was one time I was good at this. I made plates for all my bridesmaids that represented what I loved about them. I was quite proud! You'll have to trust me as I can't find the picture of them all holding up their plates in front of their faces. Please enjoy this picture of a picture of them enjoying their plates as I do not know how to scan:
I wrestled with myself about deserving this trophy... 104 is definitely not 110. And it's made worse that these last ten were blogged about at the beginning of the NEXT summer instead of when I did them. But I finally said screw it! I did it! I did 104 things and 104 FUN things at that! I do deserve a trophy! Everyone deserves a trophy for something they do. Go out and get yourself a trophy for the next cool thing you do, no matter what it is.
My next trophy will be approximately 20 inches long, weigh about seven pounds and I will paint him with kisses.
Thank you for joining me up to this point on my ride called Life. We'll see where we go next!

I figured this would be the perfect way to end my summer adventure.
Turns out it wasn't, but not really for any reasons other than personal. Despite the sad news I received, I did tell my sister I was pregnant while I was there. So maybe it balanced out.
If you were following me while I was on this fandango last summer, this is the place where I planned to do all this blogging to catch up as I relaxed in a floating house. Only problem was they said they had internet, but they didn't. In their defense, they tried to fix it... all day... but to no avail. Pretty frustrating. Between that and cool, cloudy weather it wasn't ideal. That and the price tag! Whoa!
They have a rate schedule based on high and low seasons so there are affordable dates if you plan ahead (plan ahead... plan ahead... yeeeaahhh, now what is that again?) and they compromised that I could not do the three night minimum, but could do two. Never hurts to ask.
You are paying for a very unique, swanky, retro lake house that floats in a basically private cove. I did not go in the height of summer; I imagine it can get crazy like anywhere else, but this time was peaceful and quiet. They have fun vintage things like an original wash-o-matic scrubby thing that attaches to the sink complete with the original magazine ad for it from the '50s that says it's so much fun even your husband will help with the dishes. I think we all took turns using it. It will sleep up to 14 if the 14 of you are very, very close friends. Small beds, several to a room, will accommodate that many, but do you want to?! If you don't it's what drives up the cost so if you choose to only sleep one couple to a room, you're down to dividing it by three. Just an observation.
I'll tell you what may be worth the price of admission though is the rope swing off the top balcony. If you are into that sort of thing. Which I am not, but I do enjoy watching. Kinda like karaoke.
Oh thank gawd karaoke wasn't on the list...

I've stopped and started this post twice.
I either alarm you that they let me walk in, without kids, in order to check it out for a "birthday party", air quotes mine, or I gross you out by talking about how germy I think it is.
Those of you with kids may already be freaked out by both those scenarios. Even without a kid, I was aware that a single person wanting to look around a kid infested playground could be cause for alarm. The likelihood of a creep actually doing that is really, really small though. It would not keep me from going to this place with my own kid. I would think twice about the germs though.
While there are no signs like at Metz Park, you still have to wonder what a snotfest this place probably is. Is that different than any other place where kids congregate?... or adults for that matter?... no.
Because honestly, tell me you don't want to run through that giant shark mouth yourself! I do!!
Then go home and take a shower.

Whoops.
I missed this.
I can't remember if it was because I forgot it was a movie thing and missed the last show or that they were doing some renovations and were closed temporarily.
Or that I just didn't shave my legs.
For the record though, I did go and no one was there and there was no water in the pool. I even took pictures... that I can't find. I swear I stood there outside the gate wondering why I had never gone given it's rich history. So you're just gonna have to believe me.
You do believe me don't you?!

I not only want to hug Mother Nature, I want to kiss her. On the mouth.
Westcave Preserve is one of the most primal-ly beautiful Texas landscapes I've ever seen. Like what it looked like before humans. Just breathtaking. I kept having to stop and just... look.
And you need to look lest you disturb the only other living being on my tour:
Grassland and meadows give way to a canyon and grotto that all tell the evolution of the Texas Hill Country. They do guided tours so you don't screw anything up... and so they can tell you about what you're seeing. It's not a super easy hike in and out, but not hard for someone in better shape than I am. Worth every step though either way.
There's really not much more to say because you just need to see it. As the Austin Monthly article said, "Why aren't you there yet?"

If I could type this entry as one big blur I would because that's about how fast I saw Hamilton Pool.
Running late (no surprise) and got there not long before they make everyone start hiking out. I begged my way in and practically ran down to the pool. Great hike if you have time to pay attention! Hit the pool and realized I'd been here before! How drunk was I in my early 20s that I don't remember being to some of these places?! Hippie Hollow, I remember... because... well... it's Hippie Hollow. YaknowhutI'msayin'? (wink wink nudge nudge).
Hamilton Pool is a really supercool swimming hole though! I waded in and then walked around the perimeter on my way out. Nature really is awesome. Amazing actually.
Between this, Krasue Springs and Cibolo Nature Center, I just want to give Mother Nature a big ol' hug.

HAVE YOU BEEN HERE?!
It is GORGEOUS! I had no idea this place existed. To me it looks like some Nirvanic oasis. Except for the trashy people. They are not invited to my real Nirvana.
I highly recommend you wear water shoes. I did not and almost had a panic attack that I would not be able to climb out of the water. I was there alone, I would have had to ask a stranger to help me, and what if my swim suit came off or something?! I say that because the water is almost breath-takingly cold and with shrinkage, my suit was all loose! It was that or because I insisted on buying one that was too big because it was so cute.
There's a grotto and a water fall and a rope swing and camping and lots of little springs and hiking and a butterfly garden... you get the idea. It's just gorgeous. It's one of those places you wish you'd discovered before everybody else, but then you'd just be more pissed off when it was crowded. So I guess it's good that it's been around since the Native Americans were settled here and we can just accept that everybody loves it and enjoy it.
Just wear a swim suit that fits.

Walburg? Walburg?! I know Walburg! I went to Southwestern University in Georgetown as did my parents before me and their parents before them. We know Walburg. We also knew Joe's down the street where my parents would take me in what then passed as a car seat and set me on the pool table under a Budweiser light. My mom can still recite the little spiel on the label. And will. Without provocation.
It's really a cruel twist of fate that I put off going to Walburg Restaurant and Biergarten until after I found out I was pregnant. What's the saying? "Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink"? Luckily, the friend I went with was so drunk on schnitzel that she didn't realize my weak reason for not drinking was just a red herring.
Unless you know your Bayerische Semmelklosse from your Bauernfrühstück, you'd do right by having the buffet on the weekends. It's really good and you get to try several things. If you already know your rouladen from a hole in the ground, you can order off the menu as it has a few different offerings than the buffet. The night we went they were so busy, our server warned us that ordering off the menu would take a while. Buffet, it is! And honestly, it was good and I'd go back for it.
We sat in the biergarten for a while listening to the band and watching people polka (Not really. Or maybe they were. Heck, I don't know.). Damn you "alcohol may cause birth defects"! I really wanted a beer. There really is something not quite right about not being able to drink in a biergarten. Then it's just a garten. And where's the fun in that?
But do grab the fam and head on out. Make a day of it! You could go to Inner Space Cavern in the heat of the afternoon, do a quick tour of old cemeteries and churches or cult movie locations and head to the Walburg Mercantile (as we always called it) for dinner.
And have a beer for me. Hell, have two.
